In 2026, the SEO stakes got higher for two reasons. Practitioner's Note: What I Actually Use
Out of these six themes, Astra is what I install most often on client projects specifically when using Elementor PRO. It strikes the right balance between performance, customisability, and the breadth of features clients actually need (WooCommerce compatibility, multiple header layouts, built-in schema). For pure blogging or very performance-sensitive builds where Elementor isn’t required, GeneratePress is my first choice nothing beats its page weight. And since late 2025, I’ve been recommending Blocksy to clients who want more design flexibility without sacrificing speed.

Blocksy wasn’t on the 2025 version of this list it’s earned its place since then. Where it really shines is for designers and developers who want precise layout control without sacrificing Core Web Vitals. PageSpeed Score
OceanWP sits at #6 not because it’s a poor performer 90 PageSpeed on a clean install is entirely respectable but because Blocksy and Neve overtook it on design flexibility and mobile performance respectively. Where OceanWP still wins is WooCommerce depth: product page customisation, cart behaviour, checkout flow all handled with more granularity than most of the themes above.
For clients running established WooCommerce stores with complex product structures, OceanWP’s extension ecosystem is mature, well-documented, and actively maintained.

My Verdict — What Clients Actually Use
- Blog or business site, SEO is the primary goal: GeneratePress. Every time. Nothing comes close on raw performance.
- Elementor-based build, most types of site: Astra. It's the most reliable Elementor companion and the schema support is excellent.
- Client wants to self-manage in Gutenberg: Kadence. The block library is beginner-friendly and the templates are ready to customise.
- Design-forward portfolio, creative brand: Blocksy. The customisation depth is now genuinely competitive with premium themes at twice the price.
- Heavy mobile audience, news/media publisher: Neve. The mobile-first architecture and AMP compatibility are purpose-built for this use case.
- WooCommerce store with complex product needs: OceanWP or Astra. Depends on how custom the product page and checkout flow need to be.
A note on theme & plugin combinations
The theme is the foundation but it’s not the whole answer. Every site I build gets Rank Math Pro for schema and meta, WP Rocket for caching, and ShortPixel for image compression. The theme sets the ceiling; the plugin stack determines whether you hit it.
Quick Wins: After Choosing Your Theme
- Install Rank Math or Yoast SEO Pro immediately the theme creates the structure, the plugin fills in the schema, sitemap, and meta details
- Configure your caching plugin (WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, or your host's native cache) before doing any performance testing
- Compress all images to WebP before upload a fast theme can't overcome 2MB hero images
- Audit your plugin count: every active plugin adds HTTP requests. Remove anything unused
- Run a PageSpeed Insights test on your homepage immediately after theme activation, before adding plugins this gives you the real baseline
- Add JSON-LD Schema markup for your business type (Organization, LocalBusiness, or Article) — AI search engines read this preferentially in 2026
